  Police say they have traced an address that may lead to the family of the woman found in the Clayville river on 7 September
  IOL reported at 06:32 on Tuesday 22 September that police are still trying to find the family of the woman whose body was found in a river at Clayville, near the Mall of Tembisa, on 7 September, and that she remains unidentified. Deputy National Commissioner Lt-Gen Tebello Mosikili, whom IOL places outside the Boksburg Magistrate's Court on Monday, is quoted saying police "managed to track and trace the address and contacted our colleagues elsewhere in the country just to go and verify that address and see who they find at the address that we are having at our disposal", and IOL reports her as saying an announcement would follow only once the identity had been confirmed and the family properly contacted. In the same report she is quoted on whether the deaths are connected: "We are not discounting any possibility, but we are not at this stage still. I think it's seven days down the line. We cannot say there is a serial killer on the loose." Separately, EWN reported at 04:07 on Tuesday that the third person taken in for questioning over the death of Jabulile Ntimba, ninth in the police count, has been released after the prosecution found the available evidence insufficient to proceed, and that police are reconsidering their approach; this site records nothing about any person questioned or charged.   Two people appear in court charged with the murder of Jabulile Ntimba; the case is postponed to 1 October and the count stays at nine
  Two of the three people arrested over the death of Jabulile Ntimba, the woman found on 17 September and ninth in the police count, appeared in the Boksburg Magistrate's Court on Monday 21 September, Sowetan and Briefly.co.za (at 16:36) report. Both outlets give the charges as murder, which Briefly.co.za describes as premeditated murder, and defeating or obstructing the course of justice; the two were remanded in custody and the case was postponed to 1 October 2026 for a formal bail application. Deputy National Commissioner Lt-Gen Tebello Mosikili is quoted by Sowetan saying: 'After taking in the three for questioning, the team found it fit to proceed with the cases of the other two accused persons.' The third person arrested was not charged, and this site records nothing about any of the three people.   Police list the nine women with dates and places, naming the woman found on 15 July as Busisiwe Mahlangu
  The Citizen at 08:22 and Joburg ETC later on Monday 21 September published a list of the nine women with the date and place each was found, which both attribute to national police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe. The list names the woman found in Kempton Park on 15 July as Busisiwe Mahlangu, and she is now named on this site; it gives the woman found at Olifantsfontein on 14 September as identified with her name withheld until her family is informed, and the woman found in the Clayville River, Olifantsfontein, on 7 September as not yet identified. The list also names Nomfesane Mjobo, reported on Sunday as Myobo Nomfesane, as found in Kempton Park on 26 August, a date and place that match no entry on this site, and it has one Clayville River discovery where this site carries two, the seventh and eighth in the police count; SAPS has not explained that difference, so those map entries are unchanged until it does. IOL reports that Deputy National Commissioner Lt-Gen Tebello Mosikili on Monday appealed for help to identify the woman found on 7 September, said the R400,000 police reward still stands, and said: 'We are still trying to see the cases that are linked together, and we are not discounting the possibility of this.'   Police add a woman found in a Soweto dam to the broader investigation; SAPS says no link is established and the count stays at nine
  The body of a woman estimated to be in her twenties was found wrapped in a duvet in a dam at Moroka, Soweto, at about 17:00 on Sunday 20 September, The Citizen reported at 01:08 on Monday, quoting police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi as saying the circumstances are unknown at this stage; an inquest has been opened and she has not been named. EWN reported at 12:00 on Monday that Deputy National Commissioner Lt-Gen Tebello Mosikili, speaking outside the Boksburg Magistrate's Court, said this death has been added to the broader investigation, which now extends beyond Ekurhuleni. EWN also reports her as saying police have not established a definitive link between the cases, that a team including profilers is working on that question, and that the Dawn Park case is being treated separately; these are reported words, not a verbatim transcript. Soweto is in the City of Johannesburg, not Ekurhuleni, and SAPS has not added this woman to its count of nine, so she is not on this site's map or figures.   Police name the woman found in Dawn Park as Jabulile Ntimba and say her case appears to have a motive of its own
  Deputy National Commissioner Lt-Gen Tebello Mosikili, addressing the media in Ekurhuleni on Monday 21 September, named the woman found on 17 September, ninth in the police count, as Jabulile Ntimba, as carried by Briefly.co.za at 12:19, IOL around midday and Sowetan at 13:10. Sowetan quotes her saying police are 'not dismissing links to these cases', but that in Jabulile Ntimba's case there appears to be an indication of a motive particular to it; this site does not repeat the detail she gave because it concerns the people arrested. Sowetan writes, in its own words, that police have ruled out serial killer involvement in her death. The reports place her at Villa Liza, next to Dawn Park in Boksburg, and IOL gives her as about 30; the pin on this site stays at suburb level.   Government statement says one of the nine women has no missing person case, and the team is now coordinated at national detective level
  SAnews, the government news agency, published at 16:02 on Sunday 20 September an account of the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Gender-Based Violence and Femicide, which it says met on Thursday to receive a briefing from NATJOINTS, and it reports that of the nine recovered bodies, 'one remains with no missing person case reported'. That is the first official statement on this record of how many of the nine women had not been reported missing, and it does not say which woman is meant. The same statement says the specialised team investigating the murders has been 'elevated to be coordinated by the Deputy National Commissioner: Detective Services', which is official confirmation of the change reported by Sowetan and TimesLIVE on Sunday evening, where those reports gave the new head's title as divisional commissioner for detective and forensic services; both descriptions are recorded as published. Through co-chairperson Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga, the committee asks people to check on female relatives in Ekurhuleni, particularly in and around Kempton Park, KwaThema and Tembisa, to report anyone missing at their nearest police station, and says there is no requirement to wait 24 hours before doing so; it also says the committee approved a Comprehensive Emergency Strategy, without setting out what it contains.   Acting Police Minister is reported saying the cases are not necessarily linked, with some indication of different modus operandi and motives
  The Citizen reported at 15:54 on Sunday 20 September, bylined news editor Kyle Zeeman, that Acting Minister of Police Professor Firoz Cachalia said of the nine deaths in Ekurhuleni: 'All the cases are not necessarily linked, and there is some indication of different modus operandi and motives.' The same report quotes him saying 'But nothing yet has been excluded while investigations are ongoing', and writes that investigations have not 'confirmed conclusively that we are dealing with a serial killer'. That is the first time on this record that a minister addresses the question of linkage directly, where until now the record has carried national spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe on 14 September saying nothing told police they had a serial killer, and the acting National Police Commissioner reported on 19 September as saying the nine deaths remain individual cases.   Seven of the nine women are now identified, police are reported as saying, and a national divisional commissioner takes over the team
  Sowetan at 19:04 and TimesLIVE at 19:16 on Sunday 20 September, both bylined Herman Moloi and both reporting a media briefing by Acting Minister of Police Professor Firoz Cachalia, say that police have positively identified seven of the nine women found dead in Ekurhuleni over the past two months, and they name six of them: Myobo Nomfesane, Busisiwe Mahlangu, Itumeleng Kekana, Gracious Nkomo, Elizabeth 'Tsontso' Moselakgomo and Dineo Motapane. Two of those names, Myobo Nomfesane and Busisiwe Mahlangu, are new to this record, which until now carried four of the nine women named on the last official figure of three identified, and both reports say police are still working to inform the family of the seventh woman identified, so her name is not published and is not recorded here.   Two national officers join the Ekurhuleni investigation: Lt-Gen Dumisani Khumalo and Lt-Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi
  TimesLIVE reported at 17:21 on Sunday 20 September that Acting Minister of Police Professor Firoz Cachalia, speaking at a media briefing, announced that Lt-Gen Dumisani Khumalo and Lt-Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi have been called in to assist with the Ekurhuleni murder investigations. That is the first change to the investigating team on this record since 15 September, when the Acting Police Minister announced a multidisciplinary team headed by a deputy provincial commissioner, and it is the first time either officer is named in connection with these cases here.   Police are reported as saying the nine deaths remain individual cases, and a police account of the ninth woman's injuries appears
  The Witness published a report at 07:50 on Saturday 19 September, bylined Londiwe Xulu, in which acting National Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Puleng Dimpane is reported as confirming that a multidisciplinary team of investigators and specialists is working around the clock to establish the circumstances surrounding each death and identify those responsible but that, for now, the nine deaths remain individual cases. That is the first report on this record of SAPS describing the nine deaths in those terms, where until now the record has carried only the absence of any police finding that they are linked. The same report carries the acting Gauteng police commissioner saying that the ninth woman's throat appeared to have been slit, that her exact cause of death would have to be established through forensic examination, and, as before, that preliminary information indicated her body had been dumped where it was found.   The ninth woman is still unidentified: The Citizen reports that the missing woman taken to be her is alive and the identification was wrong
  The Citizen reported at 15:03 on Saturday 19 September that a 24 year old woman from Vosloorus who had been reported missing this week, and who had been taken to be the woman found dead in Dawn Park on Thursday 17 September, is alive and has come forward. The report says her family had identified a body at the state mortuary, that the identification was wrong, and that the ninth body is now unidentified; it quotes her saying, 'Clearly there's a mix-up, and the person who identified the woman at the scene might have thought it was me.' She is not one of the dead, so her name is not recorded on this site. This matters for the record because the entry for the ninth woman has carried, since 17 September, IOL's report of an early indication that a family member had identified the body; that earlier wording is kept as it was published and the correction is added beside it.   SAPS says it has issued no identikit, wanted poster or photograph of a suspect, and asks the public not to share unverified information
  The South African Police Service issued a statement on Friday 18 September saying that it has not issued any identikit, wanted poster or photograph of a suspect in these cases. The Citizen published the wording at 21:40 and IOL carried the same statement that evening; Briefly, at 21:31, is the only report found for this record that names the officer behind it, SAPS national spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe. The statement says, 'Members of the public are cautioned against sharing unverified information, as this could result in innocent people being wrongly identified, harassed or targeted,' and asks communities to rely only on information issued through official SAPS communication channels. It adds that SAPS 'assures the public that it is seized with these cases and is following every lead that may assist investigators in establishing the circumstances surrounding the murders and identifying those responsible.' This is the first statement on this record in which SAPS sets out what it has and has not released about any suspect, and it is added here on Saturday 19 September.   Official statements put six of the nine women still unidentified, and give a named officer for information
  The government news agency SAnews published two official statements on Friday 18 September, the first at 09:42 and the second at 10:57. The first carries the SAPS statement issued on Thursday evening confirming that the body of Gracious Nkomo, 28, found along the R21 in Kempton Park on 10 September, was positively identified by her family at the Germiston Mortuary on Thursday, describes her as found partially clothed, and says she is the third woman who was discovered, while its headline calls her the third victim identified, so the disagreement already on this record, IOL calling her the third woman identified and EWN the fourth, has not been settled by SAPS. That statement also reports that a multidisciplinary team of investigators is working around the clock to establish the circumstances surrounding the murders, that Kempton Park remains under intensified policing operations, and it republishes President Cyril Ramaphosa's appeal from his statement on Tuesday: 'If anyone has information about these incidents or if you are missing a relative or friend, please contact Warrant Officer Elvis Manyike on 082 465 7249,' which is the first time a named officer appears on this record alongside the task team number.   EWN reported at 08:07 on Friday 18 September that police have found possible links between some of the cases among the nine women found dead in Ekurhuleni since July, given the similarities between them. EWN attributes that to police without naming an officer, and SAPS has published no written statement saying that any of the deaths are linked, so every death on this record is still carried as not confirmed linked. The same report says four of the nine women have now been confirmed by their families, the most recent being Gracious Nkomo, whose identification police announced on Thursday night.   SAPS brings Home Affairs into the investigation to identify the dead women from fingerprint and biometric records
  EWN reported at 11:59 on Thursday 17 September that the South African Police Service has brought the Department of Home Affairs into the investigation of the nine women found dead across the East Rand since July. Acting Gauteng provincial commissioner Maj-Gen Fred Kekana is quoted saying, 'The head of immigration, the chief director from national is part of us, and the provincial manager for Home Affairs in Gauteng are part of this operation.' The same report says police are using fingerprint records and other biometric data both to identify the dead women and to establish possible connections between the cases. This is the first account on this record of another government department joining the investigation, and the first of how police intend to put names to the women who are still unnamed, so it is added here on Friday 18 September.   SAPS says a political party's R500,000 cannot be added to the reward, and the official police reward stays at R400,000
  Deputy National Commissioner Lt-Gen Tebello Mosikili told reporters on Thursday 17 September that the South African Police Service cannot take the R500,000 that the Democratic Alliance announced it would add to the reward in these cases. eNCA published her remarks at 10:17 and IOL carried the same account later on Thursday, both reporting that police were not consulted about the offer and were not told the conditions attached to it. eNCA quotes her saying 'I don't know what they are combining, but it cannot be combined' and that only the state can proclaim a cash reward, and IOL quotes her at greater length: 'How the attempts and references of doing so, whether they are legally correct to be pronounced on, I think what I would have done was to partner and collaborate with the state because this is a state issue.' Police confirmed an active scene but released no details and have not said whether it is connected to the Kempton Park discoveries. It is about 25 km from the Rhodesfield cluster and not on the R21. Deputy National Commissioner Lt-Gen Tebello Mosikili announced a 72-hour activation.

Kempton Park SAPS (3 August): found in the bushes next to the road with multiple stab wounds. Family (Sowetan): partially naked, facial injuries that left her face unrecognisable, bruises and cuts below the breast. Early national reporting: partially clothed, visible bruising. Monday 3 August, about 10:00 (Kempton Express, reported on the day; Sowetan, 15 September, also gives 3 August). Early national reporting from 14 September gave 24 August for the second discovery without saying where the date came from, and this entry carried that date until 16 September. She was reported missing to Kempton Park SAPS on 17 July, 17 days earlier.

  Dawn Park, Ekurhuleni (Maj-Gen Fred Kekana, reported by IOL). Half naked, beside the road. The Citizen (08:31 on 17 September) describes the body as semi naked and wrapped in a sheet and eNCA (08:35) as half naked and wrapped in a sheet on the side of the road. News24 (08:45) describes her as found face down in a blue T-shirt and pink underwear and does not mention a sheet. Both accounts are recorded as published; they have not been reconciled by SAPS. The only account of how the body came to be there remains Maj-Gen Fred Kekana's preliminary statement that the remains were dumped at the scene and that the incident happened somewhere else. On Saturday 19 September at 07:50 The Witness reported the acting Gauteng police commissioner, whose first name it gives as Frank where this record has carried him as Fred, saying that her throat appeared to have been slit and that her exact cause of death would have to be established through forensic examination. IOL's The Star report of Friday 18 September describes her as found with a stab wound and what appeared to be a slit throat, in the reporter's own words and not attributed to any named officer. These are the first accounts of her injuries on this record, both are reported wording rather than a transcript, and no post-mortem finding has been released for her. IOL reported on Thursday morning 17 September that Maj-Gen Fred Kekana told reporters the body was found in Dawn Park on Thursday. The Witness says a passer-by found it. No time of discovery is public, and SAPS has published no written statement giving a date.
